TOTALRL.COM RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE
Ipswich Rhinos 16 – South London Storm 24
Saturday 25 th June 05 .
Ipswich Rhinos buried the ghost of their opening games heavy defeat against
the South London Storm with a confident hard working display against the Divisions run away leaders. Until Saturday Storm had only conceded 20 points all season but the Rhinos made them fight all the way for this slender victory.

South London received the ball from the Ipswich kick off but were contained in their own half and the kick on last tackle went straight into touch giving Rhinos a scrum just into Storms half. Rhinos steadily made ground throughout the tackle set. Nick Woodland collected his own kick on 20 metres and off loaded to Windridge who drew the tacklers before spinning the ball wide to Peter Smith on the over lap to touch down from 10 metres for an unconverted try.
Following the early try there was a long spell where both side ripped into each other with fast attacking sets and big hits that caused the crowd to take a sharp intake of breath on more than one occasion. It is a credit to both sides and referee Mr. D Hayes that the kept the game flowing at such a pace without incident.
By the middle of the first half Storm started to get the upper hand and enjoyed their best spell of the game and pressurizing the Rhinos into errors and unnecessary penalties. On 22 minutes following a scrum for a knock on, South London spun the ball across field to Jason Moore who slipped between two defenders to touch down from 15 metres for an unconverted try to level the scores.
On 31 minutes Storm pressurizing the Rhinos line with an attacking set found Neil Templeman 10 metres in front of the posts, who under considerable pressure from tacklers, was able to off load to Nathan Morris in close support to touch down between the posts. Tane Kingi converting for a 10-4 lead.
The events of the two minutes leading up to half time were to have a big influence on the final result of the game. On the last play of a strong set Rhino Hooker Adam Cook looked to have given the Rhinos an opportunity to level the scores when he made the line with a scoot from dummy half. Unfortunately Cook knocked on as he grounded the ball and from the turn over Storm used their tackle set to push the Rhino back to their own line where they conceded a penalty on 0 metres. From wide on the right Storm fluently moved the ball across the width of the pitch to Tane Kingi who powered his way through a gap to score. Louis Neethling converting to give South London a 16 – 4 halftime lead.
Conceding a try on the stroke of half time would have knocked the confidence of lesser teams but Ipswich started the second half strongly and on 46 minutes closed the gap. Breaking over the halfway line Paul LeMarquand caught out the Storm defence with a grubber kick into the corner on only the third tackle for Lionheart David West to chase. Gavin Calloo covering could only hack the ball into touch. From the restart the Rhinos kept the Storms line under pressure until man of the match Vave broke free from his tacklers to touch down. Spencer Lees converting to make the score10 – 16.
Further ideas of a Rhinos come back were dented five minutes latter when Carl Calloo scored wide for an unconverted try when on the end of a cross field play from a scrum awarded after Rhinos knocked on in front of their posts,
The Rhinos again closed the score to within striking distance on 59 minutes following a strong attacking set played out along the Storms line when Woodland off loaded under pressure for Beyers Visagie, to score. Dominic Gooch converting to make the final scored 16 – 20.
On 65 minutes South London stretch their lead again following a scrum for a Rhinos knock on in front of their own posts. From the scrum the ball was spun wide through the safe hands of Neethling then Templeman to Tane Kingi who rolled off his tacklers to score an unconverted try wide.
The score was to remain 24 –16 to the Storm despite a concerted effort by The Rhinos to close the gap in the last quarter. It was a pleasure to entertain the South London Storm who came to Ipswich with the sole objective of playing hard hitting attacking Rugby in the best spirit of the game. After the game The Storm Coach praised the Rhinos saying it was the first they had felt they had been tested in a game since the pre season challenge cup games.
Next week Ipswich Rhinos travel to Luton Vipers for a ‘must win fixture’ to be sure of securing an end of season play off place.
Luton had an unfortunate week off this week as a no show by the referee meant their game against Greenwich was postponed.
